The Activities of “Translation Skills: Practical Applications” Workshop

Under the Patronage of Prof. Sherif Youssef Khater, President of Mansoura University, and Prof. Tarek Mostafa Ghalwash, Vice President of Mansoura University for Postgraduate Studies and Research, and under the supervision of Prof. Mohamed El-Alfy, Director of the University Performance Development Center, Dr. Samah El-Said, Deputy Director of the Center, and Dr. Eman Obaida, Director of the Translation, Authorship, and Publishing Unit,

the workshop entitled “Translation Skills: Practical Applications” was held on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the Conference Hall of the University Development Center.

The workshop featured a series of sessions and activities focusing on different types of translation and the essential skills that a professional translator should possess.

The sessions included the following:

  • The first session introduced the concept of translation and its main types—oral and written—highlighting the features and characteristics of each. It was delivered by Ms. Asmaa Youssef, Translator at the Center.

  • The second session discussed the fundamental principles and ethics of professional translation, offering advice to students interested in pursuing a career in translation. It also addressed common mistakes made when translating into Arabic, supported by real-life examples. The session was delivered by Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Seddik, Translator and Trainee at the Center.

  • The third session focused on scientific translation, its types, and the differences between scientific and technical translation. It emphasized the standards of academic writing and highlighted key rules and common errors to avoid. The session was presented by Dr. Lina Seif, Translator and Language Reviewer at the Center.

  • The fourth session explored legal translation, its main categories, with a particular focus on contract translation. It stressed the importance of formality, accuracy, and context, and presented practical techniques for handling ambiguous legal clauses. The session was delivered by Mr. Ahmed Mostafa, Translator at the Center.

  • The fifth session addressed the use of artificial intelligence tools in translation, including a practical demonstration on how to utilize these technologies effectively. It was delivered by Eng. Samar Gaber, Engineer at the Center.

The workshop was attended by students from the English Departments of the Faculties of Arts and Education at Mansoura University.
